Everyone is facing something

Forgive the stream-of-consciousness-nature of this post, but wanted to share a quick story…

I was just at the hairdresser I’ve gone to for the entirety of my time in NYC. She’s lovely. She always asks how I am. She always remembers my stories. She laughs at my silliness.

Today, in the middle of straightening my hair, she started crying and had to excuse herself. I don’t know why. I didn’t ask why. It’s not our responsibility to ask why.

But it is our responsibility to remember that everyone, despite what you do or don’t know about them, is going through something.

I don’t think it’s our job to fix everybody. But I do think, as humans, it’s our jobs to not break one another even more.

So be kind. And smile. And say nice things. Compliment a pair of shoes you like. Say thank you for things that seem trivial.

No, it won’t fix anyone’s problems. But it will prevent you from making those problems even worse. And, sometimes, that part matters just as much.

Longer letter later.

  1. It takes a sensitive person to know when to speak and know when to be quiet. Sometimes just letting the hurt out makes you feel better.

  2. Beautiful post… in some instances persons actually open up. I remember once I was in our park just sitting and contemplating I was honestly not there and a lady whom Id apparently zoned out was sitting next to me and she was like “what are you worrying about there…? It’s going to be okay…” long story short she went on to tell me how she jist lost her son and the afternoon became about her…haha… I listened because all she seemingly wanted to do was let it all out… this post brought back that memory… there is a saying that goes “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks…”

    1. That is such a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing it. I totally believe we are there for each other at the right times and it is NOT coincidence you were on that bench that day ❤️
